Friday funtastic

Tonight I went out to the Dupont/ Farragut area with Erica and her friends. Unfortunately the conversation drifted to money and buying houses so I decided to watch aussie rules football instead of paying attention. I don't really understand the rules except for it's a lot of running back and forth on a field. Then we headed back to Old Town for the Halloween party at Founders. Now let me just say this. I get along with almost everyone at Founders, from the owners down to the bus boys. The kitchen staff is great, even though they mostly speak spanish and I mostly speak english, we have a great time translating each other. The other servers are great, we get along really well. The owners are even starting to warm up to me and I have fun most days. Tonight though, the bartenders were (and there's really no other word for it...) complete dickheads. There is an unspoken rule that if you are a staff member at Founders, then you do not pay for your beers. Tonight the bartenders not only tried to get me to pay for them, but they also talked down to me in front of customers. The customers, seeing this, were awesome enough to say; "well then lets go someplace else..." Me, being awesome enough to stop them, said; stay for the beer if nothing else because it's great. I got 4-5 customers to stay even after they had received crappy service and had watched me get crappier service. Luckily the owners and the managers were all around to witness this. Hopefully the bartenders will burn in a special place in hell for that.

Other than the money talk and the bartenders, it was a good night spent with Erica and Joel.

Sunday, sleepy sunday

The Astros and the White Sox are in the world series. There seems to be a correlation between the success of the White Sox and the number of times 8 Men Out is shown on TV. For those of you who don't know, 8 Men Out is a movie about the 1919 Chicago Black Sox and their fixing of the World Series. Any surprise that the White Sox have not one a single World Series since then?

I've recently gotten into watching Iron Chef America. It's given me all sorts of great ideas about recipes. Tonight I'm thinking about making a seafood stew. After Scallops though I'm a little lost. I'm thinking perhaps shrimp as well as perhaps crab. I know I want to add some okra and a little hot sauce to it to give it a southern taste but after that I'm lost. Completely lost. Should be some inedible fun though.

I was supposed to be in Las Vegas this weekend for my cousins wedding but alas I have no money. SO I was stuck here working on what has to have been the worst day ever. I thought the day I turned in my keys and locked the door to the Congressional office was the worst day ever, but it turns out that yesterday trumped it. They had one server on (me) one bartender (Corey, who took a ton of tables as well), no hostess, no food runners and no bus boys. By 11:45 the restaraunt was packed. I think I waited on about 35 tables and didn't leave untill 5:30-ish. By then the damage had been done. Two tables had comped meals for (percieved) poor service quality. The cooks had remade one of my orders because they hadn't pulled the ticket like they're always yelling at us to do and Sylvia (one of the owners) yelled at me because she had to comp a tables meal. I left work and cursed my being in NOVA when the temperature's dropping and my parents are vacationing in Las Vegas and California.

Wacky Wednesday Wadness!

Today my friend had surgery on one of her knees. Apparently it was an in and out job and she was at home right after sleeping off the meds. I'm not a fan of hospitals, surgeries, doctors... really anything medicine related. So, needless to say, I did not sleep very well last night. But thankfully all went well and she should have her stitches out by monday.

The Cardinals lost tonight to the Houston Astros. I was pulling for the Cardinals this year seeing how my Sox pulverized them last year. It didn't hurt that the Sox bit it during the ALDS or that they made the slow slide to wild card in the last weeks of the regular season. This World Series will be interesting in so far as I don't care whatsoever about the outcome. I like neither the White Sox nor the Astros and think neither of them deserve to win. The White Sox have jinxed themselves (8 men out), but I like their manager. The Astros have never been to a World Series, but I have stated publicly before that I despise Roger Clemens. Sure his "retirement from the yankees" only to come back the next year for the Astros was a big middle finger to Steinbrenner... but he still left the Sox to join the Yankees. For that he should burn in hell.

On a different note, Joel forwarded this to me and I found it really quite informative. It seems that FUMA is not doing the job it should be. This is a serisous problem, first FEMA reacts poorly to the tragedy in Louisiana and now FUMA is completely unprepared for the likelihood of a Zombi attack. We should expect more from our government.

Weekend wrap up vol.1 issue 4

What a crazy weekend. Thursday night: Cap Hill happy hour. Friday night: rich people benefit ( I was the one working the benefit, not the rich people). Saturday night: A good time spent with erica, eating some kick-ass sushi, lots of wine and beer. Sunday: woke up with the worst hangover ever, sat on the couch till 4 oclock and then went to work.

I also talked to amanda smith today, I use her full name because she said that she's been reading my blog. So I want her to become famous. Amanda and I dated way back in freshman year. It was good to hear from her. I am notoriously horrible about returning, making or even answering calls, so I'm glad some people get drunk and pick up the phone. Otherwise I may never hear from anyone.

So, like I said I worked tonight. We got slammed for a sunday night and there were only two of us on. Thankfully Rico was managing and did a stellar job of getting us out of the weeds. But now I get to work sunday night, monday morning, tueday, thurday, friday, and saturday. How much does that suck? The answer: very much so. But as wendy the cook says: "Mucho money for you?"

Metro Riders

The other day I noticed that Metro has these new signs up in their cars. They have definitions of different types of riders. Often, it seems, they have just taken two words and put them together ie. doorker (noun) - one who blocks the door. I thought that was lame. There are waaaay better words you can come up with for these definitions. So I decided to do so here.

DipS#!t: one who stands to the left on the escalator, instead of walking like you're supposed to.
Douchebag: one who sits on the outside and then doesn't get up when it's your stop.
A$$monkey: The guy who talks on his nextel walkie talkie on the metro.
That really annoying chick: That chick who, no matter what time of day it is, screams and sings at an unnecessary volume.
Pig-F$%ker: Someone who walks slowly, and then instead of getting out of the way, walks right down the middle of the platform so you can't get around them without risking decapitation.
S#!t-head: Someone who eats on the metro.

So there's my list so far. I bet you thought I would mention my beloved red sox's loss to the stupid white sox the other day. But you know what? I'm not gonna say anything. Except that I had to buy a new hat. The old one had all it's luck used up last year.

Boston Red Sox

So tonight was Game 2 of the ALDS. The Sox are playing the Chicago Poser-Sox. Unfortunately we are 2 games down. Short version of the story goes as such:
Me: "I'm not saying I want Tony Graffanino to die, but he should be taken out back and shot."
Joel: "He doesn't necessarily have to die from it..."
Me: "Well, no. Not immediately anyway..."
Joel: "Just as long as it says 'GSW' on his hospital chart... if he makes it to a hospital."
Me: "Exactly."
